In the world of Persona 3, the Dark Hour is a hidden twenty-fifth hour that happens at midnight, between 23:59:59 and 00:00:00, during which the world comes to a stop. The moon turns green, water turns into blood, and monsters called Shadows prowl the land in search for human minds to devour. Most humans are not awake during this time, instead instinctively containing themselves in coffins and "playing dead" to hide from the Shadows; they're not aware of the time spent in the coffins, so they're also completely oblivious to the hour happening at all.

However, occasionally a human fails to transmogrify and falls prey to the monsters. Society calls these people the Lost, victims of an inexplicable epidemic called the Apathy Syndrome in which people become lifeless shells. In the worst case, victims turn into Shadows themselves after their body is destroyed during the attacks. Even if a person fortunately survives, they're left confused and won't remember what occurred during the hidden hour. Not everybody is like this, though.

Though rare, there are people (and sometimes dogs) who are not negatively affected by the Dark Hour. Among the small number of people who're aware of this phenomenon, these people are said to have the Potential and, as the name indicates, have the potential to awaken to their Persona. Persona are essentially manifestations of the user's psyche, and they're an existence similar to but also fundamentally different from Shadows: while they're both born from the minds and emotions of people, Shadows are malevolent manifestations and Persona are born from the same emotions, but controlled and tamed. Persona 4 touches on this more than this game, but fun fact! These people with the Potential, once they awaken their Persona, are the only beings who can fight and defeat Shadows in the way only diamond can cut diamond.

The Potential and Persona can both be brought force artificially. There are non-Persona users who can function during the Dark Hour, and there are Persona users who did not naturally awaken to their powers. However, in the latter case the Persona is incredibly unstable and almost impossible to tame. Such users must rely on drugs known as Suppressants to keep their Personas at bay or risk getting killed by them.

The Kirijo Group is a wealthy corporation that conducted experiments on Shadows up until ten years ago when an explosion destroyed its facility and killed many of their researchers. At the same night, the explosion allowed the Shadows they were experimenting with to escape. This triggered the beginning of the Dark Hour and the appearance of Tartarus, an ominous Shadow-infested tower that only appears during the Dark Hour. For some reason the Kirijo Group decided it was a great place to build a school so that is where Gekkoukan School now stands??? The school is owned and operated by the Kirijo Group, and it is also there that SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execute Sector), a special group of Persona users gathered to fight Shadows, was established. During the story of Persona 3, the main character is appointed leader of SEES and, with his teammates, explores Tartarus while fighting Shadows, as defeating them had a positive affect on the state of the Lost and led to their recovery.

Shadows are affected by the moon; the fuller the moon, the stronger they become, and on nights of the full moon SEES faced the strongest enemies which were also the original Shadows that escaped the Kirijo laboratory ten years ago. After they were told that destroyed these would bring an end to the Dark Hour, they did just so only to discover that they were tricked, and that by engaging in battle with those Shadows they had accidentally connected them all, allowing the world to take the next step toward the Fall. That's otherwise known as the apocalypse.

That's mostly all over now, though. While the Fall can't be canceled completely, it is currently being prevented by the main character who sacrificed his life to become the Great Seal, essentially a large door that stands between Nyx, the harbinger of the Fall, and Erebus, the ultimate manifestation of humanity's negative emotions. If Erebus comes into contact with Nyx, the world will end; the main character's soul sits eternally between them to allow it to happen, thus allowing the world to keep existing. The Dark Hour and Shadows no longer exist in the world.

However, the main character's sacrifice came as a shock to his teammates, who didn't realize why he had to die, being unaware of his decision to become the Seal on the night of the battle. His death brought heartbreak and regret, many of them unable to accept that their leader and close friend was gone so suddenly. That regret, especially the strong feelings of one of their members, Aigis, who was especially close to them, caused time to freeze inside the dormitory on March 31st. It wasn't until the remaining members of SEES reflected on where they came from, their motives, and accepted the sacrifice their friend made so that they, the people he loved, could survive, and all decided to move forward, that they were able to leave the building and continue on to their tomorrows. SEES disbanded, and the dormitory was closed.

Ken Amada is a member of SEES and their youngest human Persona user. He's also one of the last to officially become a member, and at first he just seems bright eyed and eager to help, if not a bit precocious but definitely a strong admirer of Akihiko, who was one of their older members as well as the captain of the boxing club. Not long after his arrival, though, on October 4, it's revealed that he joined SEES with an ulterior motive (although pretty much everybody did; none of them really had 'saving th world' as their number one reason) of finding out who killed his mother and exacting revenge on them. One of the other members, Shinjiro, just so happened to be the person whose Persona went berserk two years ago and accidentally destroyed Ken's home; Ken does not end up killing him, but the man lost his life anyway, taking the bullets for him when an enemy showed up and assaulted them. At first, Ken tries to run away following the incident, but he returns to SEES with a determination to fight again a resolution to himself, and a promise to Shinjiro, to continue what they started and see through it to the end. However, at this time he hasn't gotten to that point yet; when he arrives in MoM, he'll still be from before that moment of Resolution, still hiding away in the alley where both his mother and Shinjiro died, feeling lost and alone and powerless in the world after losing his home, happiness, and even his revenge. (Persona 3 is a story full of happiness and joy.)

PERSONALITY:

Usually focused and not easily daunted, Ken Amada can keep his head on his shoulders even in the most dire situations. He doesn’t mingle as much as the other members of SEES, but he works well in a team and can take orders, carrying them out fairly efficiently. He even thought about his own advantages and disadvantages when choosing to use a spear as his weapon, and he knows what his Persona’s strengths and weaknesses are. Highly independent and not the most social child in the world, he often keeps to himself, tending to stick by the dog or sit alone in a quieter part of the dorm, going in and out of the dorm by himself. Outside of the occasional meals that are made at the dorm or ordered for a party, Ken buys his own food; he also does his own homework, and he keeps on top of his own training (in secret, in his room, with a brush). He may be years younger than the other members of SEES, but he basically does what everybody else is doing on his own initiative. He knows how to take care of himself both on and off the battlefield, and he appreciate it very much if everyone would take his word for it. Really, he’s fine.

There are moments when it’s obvious how hard he is trying to stand taller and prove himself capable. He assures and reassures the others repeatedly that he can take care of himself, and then he would thrown in the umpteenth reminder the he is not a child. He says he drinks his coffee black -- or at least pretends to -- because he picked up the belief somewhere that that is the way adults have their coffee. He insists that he has little interest in superhero shows because he thinks liking something like that would make him seem childish in front of the other SEES members, but he still has action figures in his room and jumps up and down in excitement when Minato takes him to see a movie. In summer, he doesn’t say that the storm outside is scary until Minato says it first, which made it safe for him to admit it without seeming weak.

It may make him seem precocious -- cheeky, even. But Ken’s desire to be seen as an equal who doesn’t need to be babied by SEES is a testament to his maturity and awareness of what, exactly, his presence means to this group and to the world. As a member of the only group of people who could save a world heading toward destruction, he knows that they cannot afford to waste time babysitting him, and he does not want to feel that he is getting in their way. For being only eleven years old, Ken is smart and keenly aware of the fact that his Persona is the only reason why he was recruited into SEES, and the only reason he is being kept as a part of it. He’s needed because he can fight, and only because he can fight, so he feels a need to keep up with them to avoid being deemed useless. In part, this is because another member of SEES, Akihiko, is an upperclassman that he admires strongly and does not want to disappoint. In part, this is because if there is something he can do to right the state of the world, he does not want to be kicked off the operation for his powerlessness. And lastly, it is also because Ken had his own, personal reasons to keep himself close to those that wield the power of Persona: to find out who had killed his mother two years ago and see to it, with his very own eyes, that justice is finally served.

Ken’s entire life has been a cycle of abandonment, struggle, loss, and solitude, and his default emotional reaction to every tragedy -- or rather, to the injustice that caused or resulted from the tragedy -- is anger. In fact, he reacts to pretty much everything with some degree or irritation or anger. If Junpei or Yukari tease him, he gets flustered and tries to hide it by snapping at them indignantly; if Shinjiro gripes about something, he gets in a foul mood and snaps at him that if he doesn’t want to do it, he shouldn’t, but if he’s going to do it why does he complain all the time? Oftentimes, his anger is a jerk reaction to push away any other reactions, especially those that he considers to be signs of weakness. (At the same time, it’s a defense mechanism to protect himself from other feelings like sadness and hurt.) But in those moments when he is at his angriest, the rage is caused by what he perceives to be a wrongdoing -- such as when he discovers that not only did Shinjiro get away with killing his mother two years ago, he’s trying to forget about it.

Ken believes strongly in balance and achieving justice through it. If someone commits a crime, they should pay for it; they should not get away with it, and they should not receive a punishment that less than what they deserve; it doesn’t matter what reasons played into it, and it doesn’t matter who it was that did it. Although Shinjiro is a member of SEES and a close friend of Akihiko, he must pay for what he did and Ken honestly believes that his decision to kill Shinjiro is justified. At the same time, he understands that regardless of the justification and his reasons, he, too, would have to pay for taking Shinjiro’s life. No matter what the reason, murder is wrong; what is wrong is wrong, and wrongs must be pointed out, judged, and righted -- an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life -- Shinjiro’s for his mother, and his own for Shinjiro’s.

But behind the strong belief and the anger he used to force himself forward with, Ken is just a lonely child with nobody to turn to. After even Shinjiro dies at the hands of somebody else while protecting Ken, he’s forced to come face to face with the fact that he has nothing to hold on to. The person and moment he lived the last two years for was snatched away from him, leaving him with nothing to throw his rage against, just an emptiness where his mother used to be that he can no longer attempt to fill with his hatred for her killer. Ken had always used his anger to pretend not to see that he was alone (always was, always will be), but when the anger doesn’t come, he’s forced to come to terms with it -- and then he goes and does it when Akihiko tells him that whether he finally succumbs to his grief or keeps going regardless is a choice only he can make.

Ken Amada is someone whose childhood and innocence were uprooted, torn apart, thrown to the ground and buried in rubble. He was abandoned by those who could have helped him, and he was left to stew in his hatred for years. He had planned to kill a man and take his own life right after because, at eleven years old, he knows that he had lost anything he ever had in his life and that he will lose anything else he might get in the future. That is an incredibly devastating conclusion to make about your life when you are eleven years old. Still, what’s more defining about him than his resignation to solitude or his merciless value system and sense of justice is his decision to return to SEES and keep fighting to help save the world despite the fact that the world has never caused him anything but misery. Although there will be nobody to come home to at the end of the battle, and although there may not be anybody who mourns him should he lose his life, although there may not be any rewards for his struggles in the end, although the only reason why SEES would even act concerned about him is their need for his powers, Ken chooses to continue fighting because he, with the awareness that transcends his age, knows that saving the world is the Right Thing To Do, and that he is one of the only people who can do it. Even if he might not get anything out of it but more misery, he alone should not be the one to selfishly decide to let the world end. Because if what is wrong is wrong regardless of the circumstances of anyone involved, what is right is also right, and what is right must be done regardless of how he feels about it.

POWER:

Ken and the other members of SEES utilize the power of Persona, powerful creatures described as being its users true self. For explanation's sake, they're monster-like things that dwell in the psyche of those with the Potential and can be called forth to be used in battle. SEES uses a gun-like item called an Evoker (reference one, two) to summon their Persona by "shooting" themselves in the head with it and shattering the barrier between their psyche and the outside world (fun!). Ken's Persona is called Nemesis.

Kala-Nemi has the ability to block to light-based attacks but is weak to darkness-based attacks (Ken himself also has the same immunity/weakness), and it is also capable of using light- and electricity-based skills as well as a couple of healing/recovery skills.

>> Spear Conjuring/Fighting
Each SEES member also has a weapon, and Ken's weapon of choice is a long spear (although you can also give him things like a scrub brush or lance). I don't want him to arrive with a spear, but rather I'd like him to get the ability to conjure a spear via superpower so he doesn't have to carry a bit old weapon that's longer than he's tall around all the time. Other than being magically appearing, his spear won't have any special abilities. It can only exist for as long as he's conscious, and its sharpness and strength of the handle will be affected by his mental strength -- if he's tired, distracted, or distressed, or not in 'peak condition' in any way, the blade will be duller and the entire weapon easier to break.

Ken is actually already one of the faster characters in Persona 3, but realistically, he's still a not-even-five-feet eleven-year-old child, and therefore not very fast at running and struggles to reach things that are higher up. And so, I'd like him to have the ability to run faster, as well as the ability to kick off the ground and leap at relatively inhuman heights. Like up to the height of a three-story building.

[He doesn't want to use the camera, partially because it felt dumb to point the phone at his face while talking, but also because he didn't really want to show his face on the network. The school back home warned him plenty about the dangers of the Internet, and this network -- well, it wasn't that different, right? Sure, they might be monitored by the government, but that didn't keep individuals from the superhero system from being dangerous. Creeps and kidnappers and pedophiles and murderers. Better safe than sorry. He makes sure his feed is turned to the 'audio' setting.]

Um, hello. [Oh dear. He hopes his voice didn't just crack.] My name is -- ah, um, I probably shouldn't give out my real name, huh? An alias... do people use that, around here? I mean, everyone here's supposed to be a superhero, right? And heroes use aliases.

[That sentence fades off into a mumble, and he pauses, feeling embarrassed. He didn't want to come off as too enthusiastic by blabbering off on his superhero knowledge and philosophy. He tried so hard to keep it a secret from the high schoolers he lived with back home because it was so childish. And here, he has to make sure to keep up with the others, too. It seemed like most of them were adults, after all.]

So, for now, I guess I'm nameless. But I'm new, and plan to help as much as I can. So I hope I can, um, be of some assistance to everyone. Thank you.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

When he thought he wanted to disappear from that city, he's quite sure, he didn't mean to actually disappear. He had hoped. But it was one of those hopes you had while knowing there was no way for it to come true. Someone might say he shouldn't be surprised, because his world had its own set of magical things and he was fighting the apocalypse of all things, but he knew from his readings (and shows) that every world had its set of rules, of magics that could or could not exist. They couldn't be omnipotent. He had figured Shadows and Personas were The Powers of his world. It didn't occur to him that those worlds could cross.

Anyway, regardless, the bottom line was he wasn't expecting to end up in another world, especially not now of all times. And especially not with his fuzzy canine friend from the dorm at his heels, sitting good-mannerdly and glancing up at him from time to time as if to ask him what was happening, or to make sure he was all right. He... didn't seem angry, at least, and he wasn't sure if he should be relieved or even more concerned. Koromaru should be hating him, right now. He looks down at him, and sighs, reaching to ruffle his fur and give him a few soothing words. Soothing, he hopes; he can hardly grasp what's going on as they're led through an explanation, then on a tour of what looks like an apartment they were taken to. Their new residence, apparently.

He really had been wanting to disappear. He won't deny that. Nothing was more unbearable than being in that town, robbed of family and happiness and even his revenge. He couldn't return to the dorm, not after what he did and caused. He can't go back there, and he can't go back to his relatives', either; they sent him to Gekkoukan's dormitories to keep him out of the house, he knows that. Without anywhere to go, nobody to turn to, and no right to do so at all, he had found himself at the alley his home used to be, wondering if he stayed there long enough his mother might turn up.

She hadn't. Instead, he'd blinked, and when he opened his eyes again he was here. In Florida? That's in America, he thinks. He doesn't understand. He was so dumbfounded, he hadn't even been able to ask the woman any questions, and he watches her leave, now, handing him the keys to his apartment, giving him a greeting of farewell, patting Koromaru's head. It was all moving so fast now, and it's only when he hears the dog whining at him that he snaps out of his daze. And then the realization sets in. He's in a foreign country. He's alone. He doesn't know what time it is or even the date. He got... kidnapped? With Koromaru. And that lady said something about tensions with another country. So -- a war? His hands shake.

"... Oh my god." That's all he can think to say.

FINAL NOTES:

>> pets: as asked and permitted here, Ken will be arriving with Koromaru as a pet companion. As stated there, Koromaru's Persona powers will be nulled and he also won't be receiving any game-given superpowers. The only skill he'll have is being able to cut things if he could get a hold of a short knife-like object to hold in his mouth, but that's something he just apparently knew how to do, power or no power. He will not be arriving with any given weapons. He's just a dog in a vest.

Persona 3 is a canon that deals heavily with the topics of death, depression, and suicide. For example, P3 characters summon their Personas by pointing a gun at their bodies and pulling the trigger. While he's been in a better place mentally and does not talk about it in-depth, Ken himself is a character that struggles with depression and has exhibited suicidal ideation in canon. Physically, he's healthy as a horse. He's canonically pretty athletic and doesn't have any illnesses. Species wise, he's 100% human.

Persona are a manifestation of the user's psyche, so it's not that he has some outside entity possessing him or anything, but because calling his Persona has given her physical form, I treat her as something that resides in his mind as something sentient but not independent instead of simply melting back into his mind when inactive. Characters of the psychic type are free to sense her if they should attempt to take a look. Otherwise, Ken struggles with (so far) untreated depression and PTSD as a result of having his mother killed right in front of him then being alone in seeing the Dark Hour for two years. That's the gist.

Ken is currently dating Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls and not looking for anything else. He is also 12 years old and not sexually active, and I am will not be seeking to put him in any such relationships! Unless your character wants to be like the Iron Bull and give him the birds and bees talk again. PLEASE NOTE: While he has a questionable relationship with Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter, that was a CR started after careful discussion with the player as well as an established acquaintance with the player. If you have any questions about that, please feel free to contact me.

injuring/killing »»

Ken's no stranger to fighting or injuries and he has a tendency to look straight at death and spit in its face. He actually has some pretty handy healing skills so please keep that in mind, but he's easy to injure because he has a poor sense of self-preservation despite it. I have a specific character arc in mind for Ken in MOM so I would like to avoid killing him, but if your character wants to achieve something close to it, I'm happy to plot with you! Please just keep in mind his healing skills and the inevitability of some very, very angry cast and CR that your character will have to say hello to.

Ken's a pretty smart modern-day child so he knows how to use technology just fine but he doesn't know the first thing about locking things that aren't the standard "turning things into a private feed" option, so it won't be difficult to hack into his stuff unless you're blatantly leaving traces of it.

	To this day, Ken is still a child who was orphaned as an indirect consequence of the Kirijo family, and Ken is also the indirect cause of one of Mitsuru's friend's death. Even if their bond as two SEES members is strong, they don't have a whole lot going for them independently, and now they have a whole year between them. That said, Ken still likes her. He's not happy she has to be in a war, but he's happy she has a chance to be with Minato again after losing him, and he believes that this world has a lot to give them that'll make up for the struggle all SEES members have gone through. He wants to get to know her better and actually be able to call her a friend on his and her own terms. (full length here)

	If asked about where he currently is in life and asked if he owed it to anybody, Ken would answer that he didn't accomplish any of it on his own, and would stress that of all the people he knew he owed it to Jaime the most. He was one of the most earnest voices in trying to get Ken to accepting being alive rather than simply resigning to the fact, and he was the one who taught him the most about what the warmth of family can be to someone, and it's his stories about the Reyes people back home that opened Ken up to the idea of trying for something like that, too. And of course, he's a part of that! He's the gentle, motherly older brother, all the way from the doting to the lecturing when necessary. (full length here)

	Kaneda is like an older brother, but a more apt description of Kaneda would be that he's safe. Around him, no matter what sort of danger they're walking into at the moment, Ken's able to feel safe. He's also become so important to Ken that he triggers the self-sacrificial, martyr side of him; he's determined to the point of being desperate to have him be happy, and the only thing stopping him from outright sacrificing himself every time is the fact that Kaneda comes to bring him home every time, letting him know that he's needed, too. The episode in January where he got the confirmation that he had a home with him has since kept him anchored in place, and from now on he wants to always be able to fight at his side for both their happiness. Ken's been learning steadily, over the last couple of months, how to fit into this new established brotherhood with him. (full length here)

	Dipper isn't someone Ken's gone through a lot of emotional upheaval with - they don't fight or talk about serious things very often, or in depth. But Dipper has always been endlessly supportive of Ken and he's never had a moment of doubt with him when it comes to how much they care about each other. Dipper was always someone he felt comfortable and confident in calling a friend, and he's definitely a source of hope. In a way he thinks it was inevitable that Dipper would be the person he came to like. Where Ken on his own would simply resign to an inevitable future, being with Dipper gives him hope for it, and nobody else inspires that as much as he does. Even if they might have to say goodbye one day, he wouldn't give up the relationship they have now for anything. (full length here)

	Mabel is actually Ken's best friend. She's the one he's known the longest and the one he's able to be the most himself around. She draws out an honesty from him that isn't all serious, emotionally heavy confessions. He's protective of her as he is about anybody important to him, but he also doesn't fret about her as much as he could. She's more of a partner in crime and self-proclaimed justice than a damsel who falls into distress. He appreciates her a lot for all the sarcasm he goes at her with, and if she so much as called his name he'd drop anything to go help her. (full length here)

	After how low they'd fallen last year, the point they're at now is pretty miraculous and Ken's almost okay with this. He's relieved that he can be around Tetsuo (and Kaneda) without feeling like he's going to destroy something between them again. That said, he's not quite aware of how much better their relationship objectively is because he's cautious about getting too relaxed about it. They have been talking, and they've been sharing things. He's also learning to be protective of Tetsuo for being Tetsuo and not just for how important he is to Kaneda (a basis for how protective he is of a lot of people related to Nonah 5). Ken struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts/feelings pretty regularly, and as such, his inner monologue as well as dialogue can touch on suicidal ideations. He also has a power that's activated by firing a fake gun pointed at his head. In general, unless plotted otherwise, you won't have to worry about him dumping that on your character on first meeting, and I would prefer to talk to you OOCly first before pulling any of these cards.
